　　Both with spear in hand and staring at each other, none of them dared to make the first move.

　　The watching crowd circled them in the center. A stratagem occurred to the bailiff. He said to the robber, "The xianwei is here, both of us are outstanding people.

　　Do you dare to have a fight with me before the xianwei?" The robber never gave a damn to the government soldiers. He agreed to the proposal without anyhesitation.

　　The bailiff stroked him when he was unprepared and killed him with the spear. Thus saved his own life.

　　When Chen Xiang served as the head of the Puchengcounty1, Fujian province in Song Dynasty, he once arrested a group of suspects, but could not tell which one was the thief.

　　He called together all the suspects and told them, "A bell in a temple can tell who is the thief, and it is very sensitive.

　　Later, all of you must touch the bell, and if the bell rings, then the one who touched it is the thief."

　　He then secretly ordered people to carry the bell here and painted it with black ink, and covered it with a cloth. Then he ordered those suspects to touch the bell one by one.

　　After doing this, he checked the palm of all the suspects and interrogated the only one whose palm hadn't been blackened.

　　This suspect turned out to be the thief. Because he feared that the bell would ring, he did not dare to touch the bell.

　　Although Chen Yaozi was a civil official in Song Dynasty, he loved archery very much, and was pretty good at it.

　　One day he was practicing in his own field, and eight or nine times out of ten he hit the target.

　　He became quite complacent. Looking around, he found an old man who sells oil standing nearby.

　　And the old man only nodded slightly towards his skills, not amazed. Angered by this, he called the old man to come over and asked him, "Do you also know archery?

　　Aren't my skills brilliant?" The old man took out a gourd from the wicker-basket and placed it on the ground.

　　He covered the opening of the gourd with a copper coin.

　　And then hescooped a spoon of oil and began to pour the oil into the gourd through the hole in the coin drop by drop without wetting the coin.

　　The old man said to Chen Yaozi, "This is only practice makes perfect, nothing so brilliant." Chen Yaozi laughed and sent him away.
